Episode #15: Olivia Staton
Welcome back to the Dominic Brancazio Podcast! In this episode we are joined by my friend Olivia Staton. Olivia is the 2nd flutist with the Philadelphia Orchestra joining in their 2018-2019 season at the age of 21. In addition to playing with the Philadelphia Orchestra, Olivia is also a graduate of the Juilliard School, was a fellow with the Tanglewood Music Center, is an active teacher, and is also a Yamaha Performing Artist.
In this conversation, we continue talking about practice strategies for all of the instruments in the orchestra focusing on her instrument the flute! We also talk about Olivia’s travels around the world growing up, how she established long term practice habits in high school, discuss her transition from college to playing in the Philadelphia orchestra, how she prepares music for rehearsals, how she adjusts what she practices for different situations, how she incorporates playing orchestral excerpts into her warm-up, and about her YouTube play along etude videos she recorded.
If you would like to learn more about Olivia, I have attached some links to check out below. This has been so much fun getting to catch up with Olivia and hear her input about how she practices. She is such a dedicated musician and a true inspiration, and I think that it really shows in this talk. Thank you for listening and please enjoy the show.
