Episode #35: Julia Thompson
Hi everyone and welcome back to the Dominic Brancazio Podcast! In today’s episode we’re joined by my friend Julia Thompson. Julia is the Instructor of Percussion at Duke University, a freelance musician throughout North Carolina, and currently the Opera Librarian with the North Carolina Opera. Today we dive into more practice strategies focusing on Julia’s specialty as a percussionist and we also talk about her perspective being a librarian.
We specifically go over Julia’s background in music, how she got started in percussion and what made her want to be a professional, what it was like for her studying percussion performance and library science at the university level, we go over different strategies for managing all of the percussion instruments when practicing, we talk about some of the overlooked details many people probably wouldn’t consider when it comes to playing percussion instruments, and we also talk about having a beginner mindset when trying new things.

She’s so much fun to talk to and I always learn a lot from her regardless of what we’re discussing. She has a wealth of information and great stories to share and I hope you all get a lot out of this episode. Thank you for listening and please enjoy the show.
