Episode #33: Jessica Ryou
Hi everyone and welcome back to the Dominic Brancazio Podcast. In today’s episode, we’re joined by my friend Jessica Ryou. Jessica is a graduate of USC and the Cleveland Institute of Music, was a fellow with the New World Symphony, has extensive experience as a freelance musician, chamber musician and studio musician, was an adjunct faculty member at East Tennessee State University and is a now member of the violin section with the North Carolina Symphony. In today’s conversation, we dive into the topic of the different ways we as musicians can get back into shape from taking breaks from our instruments.
We specifically talk about getting back into shape physically, mentally and musically, how to be efficient with getting back into shape, how the role or the demands of the job you’re doing can influence how you prepare for rehearsals and concerts, how chamber music and solo playing can help your large ensemble performances, we talk about healthy attitudes towards mistakes in the practice room, and Jessica also details a little bit about her process for preparing for orchestral auditions.
If you would like to learn more about Jessica, her upcoming concerts and her work, please check out the links in the description below. I had such a great time getting the chance to meet with Jessica again in this episode! There are a lot of different approaches to this particular subject and Jessica had so much wisdom to share. It was a real treat getting the opportunity to talk to her again and I hope you all enjoy this conversation as much as I did. Thank you so much for listening and please enjoy the show.
