Episode #31: Erin Munnelly Denning

Hi and welcome back to the Dominic Brancazio Podcast! In today’s episode we’re joined by my friend Erin Munnelly Denning. Erin is an active freelance flutist in North Carolina, adjunct instructor at Shaw University, and the personnel manager of the Chamber Orchestra of the Triangle and the Durham Symphony Orchestra.

In today’s conversation, Erin and I talk about our lives freelancing as a classical musicians. We specifically talk about Erin’s background in music, how she started her career as a freelancer, give some insight into some skills that are useful for when you’re self-employed and performing with different ensembles, we discuss teaching private lessons, how she goes about being a personnel manager while performing, expanding your skills outside of playing your instrument, and we also share some fun stories along the way.

If you would like to learn more about Erin’s work, please check out the links in the description below. I had a wonderful time talking with Erin in this episode! I think freelancing can be challenging especially when you’re starting out, but it can be a very rewarding and fun career as well. I hope our chat can offer some insight into what freelancing can be like for a classical musician and I hope you all have a good time listening to this episode. Thank you for tuning in and now please enjoy the show.
