Episode #30: David Dash
Hello and welcome back to the Dominic Brancazio Podcast where we talk about all things classical music! In this episode, we’re joined by David Dash. Dave is the Assistant Professor of Trumpet at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts, a member of the Santa Fe Opera, current Acting Associate Principal Trumpet of the North Carolina Symphony, and is also a Yamaha Artist. Dave was also previously the Assistant Principal Trumpet of the Naples Philharmonic in Naples, Florida, a member of “The President’s Own” United States Marine Band, and also has performed all across the country with the symphonies of Baltimore, Atlanta, Charlotte, San Francisco, and Los Angeles.
In this episode, we talk all about practicing the trumpet! We specifically go over how you can structure your practice sessions, different ways on warming-up, thoughts on breathing exercises and playing the mouthpiece, discovering ways of making your playing as efficient as possible, the similarities and differences of teaching students of different ages, talking about different stages of developing a skill, building trust and confidence for your performances, ways of accepting criticism in order to improve, and gaining inspiration from recordings and different players.
