Episode #18: Joseph Peters
Hi everyone and welcome back to the Dominic Brancazio Podcast. In this episode we are joined by Joseph Peters. Joe is a fantastic oboist currently playing Associate Principal Oboe and English Horn with the North Carolina Symphony and he is also a wonderful conductor leading the Taneycomo Festival Orchestra in Branson, Missouri. In today’s episode, we do a double practice strategy talk featuring both of Joe’s specialties: playing the oboe and conducting.
In the first half of the talk we feature the oboe discussing how Joe got into playing music, his thoughts on warming up, balancing his time practicing and making reeds, and what it’s like taking a break from an instrument as professional musician. In the second half, we dive into the world of conducting and go over how he got into it, how conducting actually helped his oboe playing, tips on approaching a score for the first time, and the role of a conductor when working with experienced musicians. I think this talk is a fascinating chance to hear the similarities of being an instrumentalist and a conductor from the point of view of someone who is amazing at both of them.
If you would like to learn more about Joe or see and hear concerts he is playing in and conducting, I’ve attached some links to check out below. I’m so happy to get the chance to hear from Joe in this episode and it’s always a real treat getting the chance to work with him in person. Thank you so much for listening and please enjoy the show.
