Episode #24: Matthew Griffith
Hello and welcome back to the Dominic Brancazio Podcast where we talk about all things classical music. In this episode we’re joined by Matthew Griffith. Matt is a fantastic clarinetist and is currently the Acting Assistant Principal Clarinet with the North Carolina Symphony. In this episode we continue talking about practice strategies of all the orchestra instruments focusing today on the clarinet.
We specifically go over how Matt got into music, how he balances his love for music and computer science in his education and career, how he structures his practice time, how he uses software he made to help his practice sessions, what it’s like to switch from different clarinets for particular pieces, how he goes about practicing dynamics and articulations, a little bit on clarinet reeds, and about the role of being an assistant principal clarinet in a clarinet section.
If you would like to learn more about the future concerts Matt will be performing in with the North Carolina Symphony, please see the included link in the description below. I loved getting the chance to talk to Matt today! He’s so much fun to work with in orchestra and I think you all listening will get a lot out of all the things he has to say. Thank you so much for listening and I hope you enjoy the show.
