Episode #20: Dave Weiner
Hello and welcome back to the Dominic Brancazio Podcast! In this episode, we have a very special guest for you all. Joining us today is Dave Weiner. Dave is a recently retired brass repairman and founder of WaveFront Music and in this conversation we dive into the world of instrument repair, specifically talking all about brass repair.
I’m especially excited for this topic because I find instrument repair to be a fascinating subject. When I was a graduate student in Baltimore, Maryland, I had the great fortune to live close to Dave who was a master brass repairman so I knew that when I needed professional maintenance and cleanings done on my horn that it was in good hands. I have very fond memories of traveling with friends on Baltimore’s light rail to drop off my horn to Dave’s repair shop and to have it coming back playing better than ever.
It’s always a learning experience getting to hear Dave talk about all of the details of how he approaches repair and I’m so excited I was able to sit down with him to talk about the subject. Some of the things we talk about in this episode include how Dave got into instrument repair, how one gets into instrument repair in general, what it’s like getting started in the field for the first time, some essential tools necessary for a brass repair shop, some tips for brass players to keep in mind in order to avoid common repair visits, French horn specific topics like recommendations on what specific oils to use on your horn, different approaches to the process of cleaning an instrument, and some other fun and interesting stories along the way.
